A historic apartment in the heart of Porto, defined by high ceilings, original plasterwork, ironwork balconies and beautiful panelled doors. The brief was simple: furnish a show apartment within a month, preserving the architecture and allowing the original details to take centre stage.
The apartment brings together everything needed for contemporary city living — a living area, dining zone, kitchen, bathroom and a sleeping level with a dedicated workspace. The mezzanine structure, which gave the project its name, makes use of the generous ceiling height while keeping the main room open and spacious.
The original ceiling mouldings, ironwork and panelled doors were preserved exactly as found. The furniture was chosen to complement them: clean lines, dark finishes and upholstery in shades of grey and taupe. A restrained palette allows the nineteenth-century architecture to lead. The blue in the painting provides the room’s singular note of colour, bringing the composition together.
The sleeping level is formed by a custom metal mezzanine structure fitted into the volume of the main room. The bed sits above, creating a compact and private retreat. Below, a glass desk and a simple lamp define the workspace, positioned to make the most of the natural light from the large windows.
Completed in just one month, this Porto interior decoration project demonstrates how thoughtful furniture selection, custom design and precise interior styling can transform a historic apartment while respecting the character of the building.
