Sustainable set design for a dystopian story filmed in Porto
The project showcases production design, where eco-conscious principles meet a minimalist aesthetic. As the production designer and set decorator, my focus was on creating striking visuals that emphasize the film's themes of overconsumption and environmental degradation. The set design incorporated sustainable materials such as repurposed textiles and biodegradable décor to highlight a future where even eco-friendly solutions become waste in an overproduced world.
Filming Locations in Porto
The film was shot across iconic locations in Porto, including the modernist Bouça Quarter and the scenic Atlantic coastline. Both indoor and outdoor settings were transformed using color theory and lighting design, blending vibrant neon tones with natural elements to reflect the film's dual themes of technological domination and ecological collapse.
Creative Solutions on a Budget
Working with a limited budget, the design focused heavily on lighting, color palettes, and carefully chosen props. Day and night shoots captured the stark contrasts of this future world: the digital façade of social media influence versus the harsh reality of environmental neglect. The project emphasized the use of eco-friendly set materials, from organic fabrics to repurposed props, underscoring the story’s cautionary tale about unsustainable consumption. By carefully integrating sustainable elements into the set design, the film raises questions about humanity’s relationship with waste and resource management.
