Orlando — Editorial Set Design, Porto
project inspired by Virginia Woolf
The starting point was the book. Sally Potter's film became the visual reference — the costume, the colour, the stillness of a face. The set design came from Harrison Howard's "Flower & Shell People" paintings, whose figures wander through mazes very much like Parque das Virtudes in Porto, where we shot.
I wanted a set that worked the same way — reading at once as part of the garden, part of the character, and clearly artificial all the same. The oversized black-and-white irises are made by hand. Leaving out the colour was deliberate: at that scale and without it, a flower stops looking like a flower and starts looking like a drawing or sketch.
